ARMA (stylized as ARMA) is a series of first-person tactical military shooters primarily developed for Microsoft Windows. Known for its high level of realism and simulation, the series combines large-scale military operations spanning extensive terrains with more intimate, close-quarters combat. The inaugural title was launched in 2006, with subsequent entries released up through 2013. Over time, ARMA titles have become available not only on Windows but also on Linux, Android, and iOS platforms.
The first installment, ARMA: Armed Assault—also called ARMA: Combat Operations in the United States—debuted for Windows in November 2006 in the Czech Republic and Germany, followed by a European release in February 2007 and a U.S. release in May 2007. This game utilized the Real Virtuality 2 engine.
ARMA 3, the latest in the series, is a standalone title developed for Windows, launched on September 12, 2013, powered by the Real Virtuality 4 engine. An early version was made accessible to the public via Steam’s Early Access program on March 5, 2013. Between late 2015 and early 2016, ARMA 3 was also released for Linux and macOS in earlier builds, with plans to synchronize these versions more closely with the Windows version later on.
